Paris, France
Frankfurt Airport
The day has finally arrived! I’m buzzing with anticipation, a feeling fueled by countless mental rehearsals of this trip. Every detail has been carefully planned, and the thought of immersing myself in the magic of Disneyland Paris and the beauty of Paris itself is incredibly exciting. Our itinerary is packed with incredible experiences, from the iconic Eiffel Tower to a festive Christmas tour, a city exploration via BigBus Tours, a historical deep dive at the Louvre Museum, and a surprise activity my boyfriend has secretly organized. Simply put, we’re ready to go!
We arrived at Frankfurt Airport with time to spare, a decision that allowed for a wonderfully smooth check-in experience with Lufthansa. Their automated luggage system was impressively efficient – a few quick taps, and our boarding passes and luggage tags materialized like magic. Security, however, was a bit more of an adventure. The temperature felt like stepping into a sauna, and the process was definitely more like a mini-marathon than a quick stroll. The pat-down experience added a touch of the absurd, though I have to admit, it's always a unique encounter. We even got to enjoy an extra-long look at all the bags going through the X-ray – the decision to rescan them all added another hour to our airport sojourn, but we chose to see it as extra time to soak in the atmosphere.
After our security saga, we found our gate tucked away in a quieter corner of the terminal. A perfect spot to enjoy a delicious cappuccino and calmly savor the remaining moments of excited anticipation. We knew an unforgettable experience awaited.
Boarding time! We joined the line, which felt more like a disorganized scramble than a calm queue. Finally, we found our seats, ready for the plane to take off. Except... not quite yet! We were informed of a 45-minute delay. The reason remained a mystery, but the airline did offer a small chocolate treat and a chance for a last-minute restroom visit. Ah, the unpredictable joys of air travel!
Eventually, we began to move. I took a Dramamine, settled into my window seat, and decided to grab some shut-eye. I woke up just as we were beginning our descent, and noticed my boyfriend still completely asleep, slumped forward in what looked like an incredibly uncomfortable position. I can't believe anyone can sleep with their head hanging like that!
Charles De Gaulle
Touching down at Charles De Gaulle, our mission was clear: baggage claim. We followed the signs, our anticipation mounting, but instead of carousels, we were met with an intoxicating aroma - the unmistakable scent of freshly brewed coffee mingling with warm, yeasty bread. The sight of those perfect, flaky croissants sparked a wave of déjà vu, mirroring every tantalizing pastry I’d ever seen on a screen or conjured in my dreams. And we were still just in the airport! Each buttery creation beckoned, a siren call to our stomachs, but practicality, that cruel mistress, reminded us that time was not on our side. We had to forgo the pastry pilgrimage, much to our collective dismay.
We finally reached the baggage claim—a vast, echoing space teeming with conveyor belts and a sea of weary travellers. The waiting game began. We waited…and waited…and waited, the minutes stretching into what felt like an eternity. An hour eventually ticked by, and the existential question hung unspoken in the air: should we have grabbed those croissants before they became a mere memory?
Our luggage finally wrestled from the conveyor's grasp, we felt ready to make our escape from the airport's sprawling confines. We confidently followed the signs to the main floor, imagining a seamless exit, but our journey was far from over. The real challenge wasn't finding the exit, but rather locating the elusive Uber pickup spot. The app provided helpful images, yet the airport's signs and the designated meeting point existed in a bizarre, multi-dimensional game of "spot the inconsistencies." After a half-hour hunt, a minor existential crisis, and a few choice words under our breath, we finally stumbled upon it.
Our Uber driver, a charming Frenchman, greeted us with a smile and a jazz-infused soundtrack. Instantly, our journey became a mobile jazz club, each note a rhythmic accompaniment to our Parisian adventure.
First Glimpse
The drive to our hotel, however, proved to be less enchanting. The world outside was a monochrome canvas of gray skies and clouds, quite unlike the vibrant, romantic France I had imagined. It felt a bit rundown, decidedly lacking in color. But we were on the highway, after all, a place not typically known for its scenic splendor.
Our hour-long drive, punctuated by traffic and a seemingly endless procession of overpasses, felt interminable. Just as my patience began to fray, we veered off the highway, onto a series of quaint, winding roads. Lining them were a captivating array of restaurants and shops, each a little promise of Parisian charm. My eyes were glued to the Uber app, tracking our location, my anticipation building with each passing street. A turn at a traffic light, and there it was, to our right, the Jardins Des Mademoiselle. "Wow," I thought, "it actually looks like the pictures!" Relief washed over me.
Nestled discreetly between other buildings, the black-and-white hotel stood as a welcoming beacon, its name prominently displayed at the top. Fairy lights twinkled around the large windows, casting an inviting glow. While the surrounding area was neither grand nor shabby, it possessed a quiet charm, a peaceful oasis that promised respite from the day's travel.
Jardins Des Mademoiselle
Stepping into the Jardins Des Mademoiselle felt like entering a secret haven. The warm smiles of the two receptionists set the tone for a truly special experience. Whisked up in the elevator, we discovered our floor held just two rooms, adding to the feeling of exclusivity. The door opened to reveal a space dominated by a magnificent, oversized bed. Crisp, inviting sheets were adorned with delicate chocolates, each promising a sweet indulgence, and a breathtaking skylight bathed the room in soft, ethereal light. The meticulously appointed bathroom boasted every modern comfort, including the luxurious warmth of a towel warmer.
We were further delighted by a welcome gift of champagne and a charming mini-bar stocked with delights. But the real magic lay beyond the balcony curtains. I couldn't help myself; I practically flung the curtains aside, throwing open the balcony door to reveal a breathtaking panorama. The iconic Eiffel Tower pierced the skyline, a majestic beacon of Parisian beauty. It was a moment of pure magic, a “pinch-me” dream come true. Reluctantly tearing myself away, the reality of our Christmas tour beckoned. After quickly layering up against the unexpectedly cold weather – a mistake we’d soon regret – we called an Uber. Downtown Paris, a mere fifteen-minute drive away, was waiting to be explored.
Parisian Pandemonium
Our Uber whisked us towards downtown Paris, 11 Rue Auber our destination, a mere fifteen minutes from our hotel. While we’re seasoned travelers, having explored parts of Europe and the Middle East, Paris was a novel experience. And let me tell you, navigating foreign roads can be an eye-opening adventure. I’ve witnessed the chaotic roundabouts of Kuwait firsthand, but Paris…Paris takes the crown for driving anarchy. I’ll even retract any previous comments on Kuwait’s roundabouts - at least there was a semblance of order to their chaos!
Parisian roundabouts, straight out of a movie scene, were a symphony of honking, abrupt braking, and bewildered drivers. How these things function with all the traffic lights, how everyone knows which lane to take, and when to switch lanes, remains a mystery. More than once, my boyfriend and I were convinced our driver was headed in the wrong direction, only to be proven wrong again. Our driver, by the way, was fantastic; it was just the sheer novelty of the Parisian traffic that had us wide-eyed.
Emerging onto Rue Auber, my boyfriend’s relief was palpable: “I am so glad we didn’t rent a car!” he exclaimed. This is a man who has driven in Kuwait and parts of Europe, no stranger to challenging roads, but Paris had clearly taken him by surprise. If you plan on driving these streets, prepare for a challenge. But honestly, I’d stick with Uber – finding parking must be a Herculean task.
Shivering, and desperately craving caffeine, we were blessed to find an ILLY coffee shop right beside the Tootbus pickup point. We dove in for cappuccinos and a flaky cheese pastry, a perfect antidote to the Parisian chill. While savoring our treats, we noticed a line forming for what appeared to be our Christmas tour bus.
Without delay, we claimed our spot and after a quick barcode scan, made our way to the open-top of the bus. We were excited by the promise of the views but bracing ourselves against the cold. Headphones in, we anticipated traditional festive tunes to soundtrack our tour but were instead met with the persistent beat of “Uptown Funk.” Who needs carols when you've got a funky groove, right? It was a completely unexpected and uniquely Parisian way to start our tour.
Tootbus Christmas Tour
The Tootbus lurched forward, signaling the start of our festive adventure. Our journey began amidst the opulent grandeur of the Galerie Lafayette on Rue Auber. We glided past the majestic Palais Garnier, then flowed down the bustling Rue de la Paix, the city’s energy thrumming beneath us.
Perched on the top deck, we were thankfully above the street-level frenzy. Our gaze was immediately drawn to the breathtaking light displays that arched overhead, a series of dazzling white illuminations. We continued our path, passing the luxurious hotels that circled Place Vendôme, and then circled the Vendôme Column, which shimmered against the twilight as if adorned for a celestial rendezvous.
As we rounded the column, our eyes were met with charming boutiques, their windows aglow with brilliant white lights, arranged in captivating circular patterns reminiscent of the classic elegance of Louis Vuitton. The sidewalks, lined with luminous trees, cast a warm, enchanting glow over the entire scene. A turn at the end of the road revealed the breathtaking Jardin des Tuileries, showcasing a grand, illuminated Ferris wheel that sparked a sense of wonder and childlike delight. Just as the magic seemed complete, the music shifted, and the air was filled with the joyful sounds of classic Christmas carols. WHOOTT! The festive spirit was undeniable.
We continued, circling Place de la Concorde before turning onto the iconic Avenue des Champs-Élysées. Lined with trees draped in glistening lights, the Champs-Élysées pulsed with life, a steady stream of pedestrians strolling up and down the famed avenue. Some even paused in the middle of the road to capture the moment in pictures. The high-end boutiques pulsed with vibrant energy, each storefront a spectacle. While there were countless stores, restaurants, and cafes, the most popular spot? Five Guys Burgers and Fries (which, in my humble opinion, isn’t even that good!). But I digress...
Our tour carried us along the length of the Avenue des Champs-Élysées, until finally, the breathtaking final act came into view: the majestic Arc de Triomphe. Silhouetted against the moonlit sky, the Arc de Triomphe stood in its full glory, the view so spectacular it felt like stepping directly into a postcard. It was one of those "you'll-remember-forever" moments, the kind that etches itself into your memory. After a brief victory lap around the iconic arch, we began our journey back up the illuminated Avenue des Champs-Élysées.
The biting Parisian wind whipped at us as we continued along the Seine. We passed the Flame of Liberty, a stark contrast to the chill that had begun to seize me, and then made our way across the Pont d'Iéna Bridge. I'm not exaggerating when I say the cold was so intense I felt as if my face might shatter into a million icy fragments. My somewhat unconventional solution? Using my hair as a makeshift scarf. A harsh lesson learned: next time a full-face mask and every imaginable layer will be non-negotiable. We had foolishly thought a single jacket would suffice, but a full wardrobe would have been more appropriate.
Yet, this discomfort paled in comparison to the sheer enchantment that followed. There are moments that defy description, experiences so profound they transcend mere words; this was one of them. As we traversed the Pont d'Iéna, the Eiffel Tower materialized, growing larger with each step, sparking a palpable surge of excitement. We found ourselves standing directly before it, a breathtaking spectacle unfolding before our eyes. From the second level, the view was nothing short of magnificent: peaceful, devoid of crowds and the usual city clamor. Bathed in a warm, yellow-orange glow, the tower stood majestic, its radiance utterly captivating. And then, as if orchestrated by fate, we witnessed the dazzling sparkle show, a brief five-minute spectacle that occurs hourly, an astonishing display that further elevated the moment.
This was an experience of a lifetime, a memory etched permanently in the heart. Countless photos and videos attempted, however inadequately, to capture the magic, the fleeting beauty of the moment. Our subsequent journey took us along Quai d'Orsay and past Esplanade des Invalides. We were awestruck by the opulent Pont Alexandre III Bridge and the grandeur of Place de la Concorde, before being greeted by a new perspective on the Jardin des Tuileries, its Christmas Market now in full view. We slowly circled the Musée du Louvre, drove down the Av. de l’Opéra, and then rounded the Palais Garnier, each landmark a testament to Parisian elegance. Finally, we made our way back to our Tootbus pick-up point on Rue Auber, our hearts full of wonder.
What We Liked About The Tour:
Breathtaking Light Displays: The dazzling lights along Rue de la Paix and other places were truly enchanting.
Scenic Landmarks: Passing by iconic landmarks like Palais Garnier, Place Vendôme, and the Arc de Triomphe created unforgettable memories.
Festive Atmosphere: The Christmas music and overall festive spirit added to the joy of the tour.
Top Deck View: Being above the street-level chaos allowed you to appreciate the scenery without distraction.
Stress-Free Travel: The organized tour with the Tootbus allowed you to sit back, relax, and enjoy the journey without worrying about navigating the city.
What We Didn’t Like:
Cold Weather: The intense cold and wind, especially during the Pont d'Iéna crossing, made parts of the tour uncomfortable.
Non-Christmas Music: The non-Christmas music playing at the beginning detracted from the festive atmosphere initially.
The Tootbus Christmas Tour was a magical and memorable experience, filled with enchanting light displays, iconic landmarks, and a festive atmosphere that brought joy to our hearts. Despite the cold weather and the initial non-Christmas music, the stress-free travel and breathtaking views more than made up for the minor inconveniences. We highly recommend this tour to anyone looking to experience the holiday spirit in Paris.
SEB Cafe
Driven by intense hunger and a winter chill, we set out to find dinner. After a bit of scouting, SEB Café caught our attention with its sleek facade and the promise of pasta and pizza. The restaurant's elegant interior was a delightful change. Greenery and large windows created a welcoming atmosphere, and the alluring aroma of fresh pasta and bread filled the air.
We chose red and white wine to accompany a Diavolette pizza and Black Truffle Pasta. The service, while friendly, was a bit inconsistent; drinks arrived after our food, and other tables were surprisingly served quicker. Despite these hiccups, our dishes were worth the wait. The pizza was a cheesy delight, boasting a fresh and flavorful sauce. But the star of the show was my Black Truffle Pasta. It was heavenly – creamy, generously seasoned, and the pasta was cooked to al dente perfection. It easily earned the title of the best pasta I’ve ever had.
I savored every bite, even sharing with William, who was equally impressed. To finish, we indulged in the Tiramisu, which was light, creamy, and satisfyingly sweet. The food at SEB Café alone would warrant a repeat visit. While the service certainly had its quirks, the culinary experience was overwhelmingly positive. We’d readily give it a 7/10, a great score for such delicious and memorable dishes.
A Stroll into Christmas Magic
With dinner settling comfortably, the evening still held promise. We decided to stretch our legs, embarking on a leisurely stroll to truly appreciate the festive illuminations that had so captivated us from the bus. And on foot, the lights were even more breathtaking, a dazzling spectacle that ignited the holiday spirit within us. Our path led us deeper into the city, drawn by an irresistible glow, until finally, we arrived at our destination: the enchanting Christmas market nestled within the Jardin des Tuileries.
The market was a symphony of light and sound, a vibrant hub of festive cheer. The air, thick with the sweet perfume of caramelizing sugar, made our stomachs rumble with anticipation. We were enveloped by the comforting aroma of roasting chestnuts, a fragrance that painted the scene with quintessential Christmas hues. While we've wandered through other European Christmas markets, this one possessed a unique quality, a vibrant tapestry of color and magic that surpassed them all.
We meandered through the tempting food stalls, each a miniature culinary wonderland. Though we resisted most of the treats, a single, irresistible cookie found its way into our hands. We couldn't leave without tangible mementos of this experience, so we explored the artisan crafts. I chose a simple magnet, a small but potent reminder of the magic we found here, while William selected an apron, a thoughtful gift for his mother.
Our journey led us to the far end of the market, where the towering Ferris wheel stood sentinel. We searched in vain for the coveted Christmas market mugs, hoping to expand our collection, but they remained elusive. Despite this, our hearts were full. Our exploration of this magical wonderland had come to its end, and with a bittersweet ache of leaving, we turned towards our hotel, already brimming with anticipation for the next day's unfolding adventures. Today's enchantment had been a prelude, promising even more delightful moments to come.
Day Two
Our day began with the delightful interruption of a knock at the door, heralding the arrival of our much-anticipated room service breakfast! We couldn't help but feel a little indulgent – after all, what's a trip to the city of love without a few croissants? The food arrived presented with undeniable charm on a wooden tray, a miniature work of art in itself. However, the portions proved to be as modest as a Parisian apartment and
the flavors, alas, were about as exciting as a grey sky on a Monday morning. The sole saving grace was the cappuccino, a much-needed jolt of caffeine that managed to cut through the culinary ennui. Fortified, at least in spirit, we layered up against the chill, summoned an Uber, and set off towards the alluring promise of a Seine River cruise at Paris Seine Port.
Seine River Cruise
Our arrival at the port was punctuated by the majestic Eiffel Tower, a familiar landmark that still held its captivating charm under the bright daylight. However, finding the elusive Cruise, a supposed highlight of our Big Bus Tour, proved to be more of a treasure hunt. The emailed directions were cryptic, leading to a brief, frustrating search. Finally, we spotted the port numbers and located it, joining a growing queue despite arriving well ahead of time.
Once on board, we secured seats near a large window and a door opening onto the deck. The lower level offered its own amenities: vending machines, a restroom, TV screens, and curious phone-like headsets. While the top deck was unfortunately closed due to high water levels, we were still eager for the journey. The captain's announcement that high winds would shorten the route didn't dampen our spirits. As the boat cast off, we anticipated the scenic voyage ahead.
Within minutes, our window view was partially obscured by two fellow passengers, a minor inconvenience. Yet, undeterred, we still managed to steal glimpses of the stunning panoramas. We passed the iconic Louvre, re-encountered the soaring Eiffel Tower, spotted a miniature Statue of Liberty, and drifted beneath gracefully arched bridges. The TV screens onboard offered a preview of the journey, interspersed with puzzling messages about the onboard audio devices. It turned out these "phone headsets" were language selectors, but they lacked useful functionality and provided commentary unrelated to the scenery.
Our voyage was surprisingly short-lived. After barely twenty minutes, the boat reversed its course, returning to port.
What We Liked About The Cruise:
Majestic Eiffel Tower: The familiar charm of the Eiffel Tower under bright daylight was captivating.
Scenic Panoramas: Despite some obstacles, you managed to catch glimpses of the stunning panoramas, including the Louvre, Eiffel Tower, miniature Statue of Liberty, and the beautiful bridges.
What We Didn’t Like:
Cryptic Directions: The emailed directions were unclear, making it difficult to find the cruise port.
Closed Top Deck: The top deck was closed due to high water levels, which limited the experience.
Shortened Route: High winds shortened the route, reducing the overall cruise time to barely twenty minutes.
Obstructed View: Fellow passengers partially obscured your window view.
Unclear Audio Devices: The "phone headsets" meant for language selection lacked useful functionality and provided irrelevant commentary.
Lack of Depth: The cruise felt underwhelming and lacked insightful commentary, making it less enjoyable.
While the Seine River Cruise had a few charming moments, it ultimately fell short of expectations due to a range of issues such as unclear directions, closed top deck, a shortened route, and ineffective audio devices. Unless it's a clear, sunny day and the headset functionality is improved, we wouldn't recommend this tour.
Big Bus Tour
Stepping off the boat, the iconic Eiffel Tower guided us towards the Big Bus Tour meeting point. Eager to begin our Parisian adventure, we clambered aboard the open-top bus and eagerly donned our headphones, selecting the English narration. Our first stop, the legendary Notre Dame Cathedral, awaited us at stop number 5. Along the route, Parisian treasures unfolded before our eyes: the vast expanse of the Champ de Mars, the opulent Opera Garnier, and the world-renowned Louvre.
The commentary, far from being a dry recitation of facts, was a vibrant and engaging storytelling experience, weaving historical context with captivating anecdotes and intriguing trivia. The bus, navigating the city streets, gracefully crossed a bridge and deposited us just a short stroll from the majestic Notre Dame.
Cafe du Metro
Our wanderings through the city streets led us to that perfect, hunger-pang-inducing moment: lunchtime. A plethora of inviting restaurants and cafes beckoned, but it was my trusty Yelp app that ultimately guided us. "Cafe du Metro" appeared, its menu promising culinary delights, and it was conveniently just up the street.
The cafe itself was a vision: an elegant black building punctuated by a charming white awning. Tucked neatly between a small park, a roundabout, and its neighboring buildings, Cafe du Metro radiated a delightful, sophisticated ambiance. We were immediately greeted and shown to our table, stepping into a bright and modern interior. The air buzzed with a welcoming warmth, mirrored by our courteous waiter. The menu presented a delightful dilemma: the siren call of pasta versus the allure of a tempting chicken sandwich. After a moment of playful indecision, I opted for the chicken sandwich and a cappuccino, while Will chose the Tagliatelle Carbonara and a glass of red wine.
Our drinks arrived swiftly, followed closely by our meals. My chicken sandwich was a masterpiece, crowned with the cafe's adorable logo branded right on the bun. Every bite was a symphony of textures and flavors, accompanied by a generous portion of fries that were so incredibly crisp, they seemed to sing a little song. The aroma was captivating, and the entire presentation was a feast for the eyes. While the Tagliatelle Carbonara didn't immediately strike my fancy, Will devoured it with gusto, raving about the rich and flavorful sauce. He finished every last bite, a testament to its deliciousness.
Notre Dame and Beyond
With lunch behind us, our quest led us towards the famed Notre Dame Cathedral, conveniently located a short walk away. As we approached, the sheer scale of the structure became apparent. It was a truly colossal sight, even with the scaffolding and construction equipment surrounding it – remnants of the devastating 2019 fire that had tragically claimed its roof and spire.
Despite the ongoing restoration, we were still treated to the magnificent west facade and its imposing towers. The cathedral was simply breathtaking. The central, rose window, a giant circle of stained glass art, drew the eye, while the intricately carved statues and towering columns offered a feast for the senses.
Wide, tiered steps offered the perfect vantage point to sit and absorb the beauty. It was a delight to witness the shared appreciation of the cathedral, with people gathered around, lost in its grandeur. Though the interior was off-limits due to the renovations, the exterior alone was a spectacle to behold.
Our post-Notre Dame wanderings led us down the street, where we encountered armed guards pacing back and forth. Intrigued, we did what any modern-day explorers would: consulted our phones. A quick Google search revealed that we had stumbled upon the Palais de Justice, its gilded gates gleaming in the sunlight.
After a bit more exploring, it was time to head back to our Big Bus pickup point near Notre Dame. Our next destination: the iconic Champs-Elysées. The short bus ride was uneventful, except for one notable occurrence. William, overcome by the day's excitement, succumbed to sleep, transforming into a picture of adorable innocence. Head tilted slightly back, eyes tightly shut, and even the softest of snores escaped his lips.
I allowed him his slumber, trusting the bus's gentle jolts to rouse him when needed. As we rumbled along, my attention was captured by a charming sight – the emerald green stalls lining the riverbank. Brimming with books and art, these quaint shops intrigued me. A little research later, I discovered these were the historic Bouquinistes of Paris, vendors who have been a part of the city's landscape since the 16th century.
Arc de Triomphe
Our trip down the Champs-Élysées culminated with a bus drop-off practically at the foot of the Arc de Triomphe. Now, this iconic landmark was undeniably impressive, but also seemingly impossible to reach, surrounded as it was by a swirling vortex of traffic. We spent a comical amount of time wandering around like lost tourists before finally spotting an underpass, complete with guiding arrows. Down we went, into a tunnel serenaded by classic French tunes – très chic! Then, the plot twist: a "pay here" booth with a line that could rival a Disney ride.
Seeing no physical gate, we did what any self-respecting budget traveler would do – we continued down the underpass and emerged victorious, on the other side! And there it was, the Arc de Triomphe, shimmering in all its glory. Photos ensued, naturally. Turns out, the "pay here" was for a view under the arch. We concluded our free view was far superior and retraced our steps. The boulevards were a treat! We browsed the high-end shops, paused for a laugh at a McDonald's nestled amongst them, and explored some very cute arcades. Then came the real test: a Starbucks sighting. Clearly, a coffee stop was mandatory! Right next to that caffeine haven was a Harry Potter train display – perfect photo-op! And after my photo shoot, we practically sprinted to our Big Bus, mission accomplished.
Eiffel Tower
Our bus, the chariot for the day's grand finale, rumbled toward the iconic Eiffel Tower. Surprisingly, even William's eyelids remained defiant of sleep this time. We arrived, and rather than immediately plunging into the throng, we decided to reconnoiter, mindful of our dinner reservation at the tower for tomorrow.
That's when we encountered the infamous lines – a snaking, seemingly endless river of people. The realization hit us: we'd need to arrive a solid two hours before our dinner to contend with the labyrinthine ticketing system. "No ticket line" and "ticket line" – a distinction that proved to be an illusion when we discovered the "ticket line" was for all tickets. A bit absurd, wouldn't you agree?
Seeking respite from the tourist frenzy, we stumbled upon a diminutive Christmas market nestled near the tower's base. The air hung heavy with the irresistible scent of brewing coffee and roasting chestnuts. We wandered through the stalls, a kaleidoscope of crafts, tempting coffee, and sugary delights. The aroma of it all was so comforting. We couldn't help but indulge, snagging some gigantic cookies that practically dissolved in our mouths like clouds.
The chilly air prompted me to seek out my third coffee of the day. William, found himself purchasing a hat after realizing his own was back at home. With our rather eclectic purchases in hand, we called it a day and hailed an Uber, eager to return to the hotel's lavish comforts.
What We Liked About The Tour:
Engaging Commentary: The narration was vibrant and engaging, weaving historical context with captivating anecdotes and intriguing trivia.
Iconic Landmarks: The tour took us past some of Paris's most famous landmarks, including the Eiffel Tower, Notre Dame Cathedral, Opera Garnier, Louvre, and Arc de Triomphe.
Convenient Stops: The stops were well-placed, allowing easy access to major attractions like Notre Dame and Champs-Élysées.
What We Didn’t Like:
· Obstructed Views: Fellow passengers sometimes obstructed our view from the window, making it harder to enjoy the scenery.
The Big Bus Tour offered an engaging and informative way to explore Paris, with convenient stops at iconic landmarks and vibrant commentary that brought the city's history to life. While there were some minor inconveniences, such as obstructed views and crowded areas, the overall experience was positive. If you're looking for a comprehensive and enjoyable way to see the city's highlights, the Big Bus Tour is a good choice.
Spa
We arrived at the hotel, our steps guided by the anticipation of the spa. Images of a serene, almost otherworldly space – blue light, trailing plants, and a miniature waterfall – had filled our screens. We approached with a healthy dose of skepticism, prepared for a potential letdown. To our genuine surprise, the reality exceeded our expectations. It was every bit as enchanting as the website promised, and we were the only guests. It felt like owning our own exclusive retreat.
There was, however, a stark contrast to the visual warmth: the pool was a frigid shock to the system. I barely managed to wade in before retreating. When another couple arrived, we sought refuge in the sauna. It was like entering a calming, illuminated grotto, and the intuitive controls made it easy to settle in. Following a thorough sweating session, we returned to our room, ready for the evening. While the memory of the glacial pool lingered, the overall spa experience had been incredibly relaxing.
Dinner at Piou
Tonight's dinner wasn't just about sustenance; it was a mini-adventure through our neighborhood. Our exploration led us towards downtown, where we discovered the charming Place Cambronne. The plaza buzzed with activity, lined with inviting restaurants. Two, in particular, stood out – Piou and La Royal Cambronne. After a moment of deliberation, poring over menus, Piou won us over.
Stepping inside, we were immediately greeted by a waiter whose warmth was truly exceptional. He welcomed us with genuine enthusiasm, suggesting we take a seat amongst the outdoor tables. We happily obliged.
Our drink orders flowed effortlessly. We requested a red wine and a rosé, and our waiter, with a confident smile, assured us he had just the right selections in mind. He returned with two glasses – the perfect match for our palates. He was engaging, sharing jokes and stories, making us feel incredibly at home.
Perusing the menu once more, I knew the classic Margherita pizza was calling my name, while Will opted for the intriguing chicken sandwich. Soon, our meals arrived, beautifully presented. My pizza sported delicate basil leaves, while Will’s sandwich boasted a stylish black sesame bun and a vibrant side salad. Everything looked fresh and inviting.
We savored every bite of our delicious meals before moving on to the true test of a great restaurant: dessert. I indulged in an Oreo-vanilla glace, a creamy delight bursting with flavor. Will chose the decadent Mousse au chocolat, which proved to be equally mesmerizing. Both desserts were simply divine, the perfect end to a wonderful meal.
We wholeheartedly give our experience at Piou a 10 out of 10. The food was exceptional, the atmosphere was perfectly convivial, and the staff were absolutely phenomenal. Bravo indeed!
Satisfied and content, we strolled back toward our hotel, ready for a restful night. Tomorrow was brimming with anticipation: a visit to the Louvre, a special photoshoot Will had planned, and a magnificent dinner under the twinkling lights of the Eiffel Tower.
Day Three
Our morning began with a happy decision – we bypassed room service in favor of exploring the hotel's lobby breakfast. We were rewarded with a vibrant and abundant spread that surpassed our expectations, a true feast for the senses. Savoring the last of our scrumptious cappuccinos, we called an Uber, our spirits high, ready to plunge into the wonders of the Louvre. The day's escapades were about to unfold!
The Louvre
The Louvre's entrance was a chaotic symphony of tourists upon our arrival, but we were determined to outsmart the crowds. Our early arrival allowed us to easily locate the general entry area. However, confusion struck when we discovered not one, but two queues: one for 10:00 AM and the other for 10:30 AM. Our tickets were for 11:00 AM. Employing what we thought was a clever strategy, we joined the 10:30 line, intending to slip seamlessly into the 11:00 AM queue once it formed.
Alas, our cunning plan was foiled. We quickly learned that each line was strictly bound to its designated entry time. Undeterred, we transformed our wait into an impromptu exploration, snapping photos of the Louvre’s impressive exterior while patiently biding our time.
Returning later, we soon realized that navigating the Louvre's entry system was proving to be a Herculean task. We thought we had finally deciphered the code, but the universe had other, more mischievous, designs. After confidently positioning ourselves in what we believed to be the 11:00 AM line, a staff member delivered the classic truth: “Wrong line, you’re with a tour group not a standard entry ticket.” Cue a collective facepalm. We were trapped in a real-life game of "Find the Correct Line," and we were losing epically. After some comically misguided attempts, we finally stumbled upon our elusive designated tour line - it was tucked away in a location that felt as remote as Narnia. Lesson learned: at the Louvre, always expect the unexpected.
Finally inside, the vastness of the museum was overwhelming. We felt like lost puppies in a sprawling labyrinth. Imagine being dropped into a maze with no map and a cast of blindfolded tour guides. Luckily, we spotted a promising "Tours" sign and decided to follow it. After a delightful round of hallway roulette, we reached a room that, we hoped, would provide answers. Instead, we received a set of cryptic directions: "Down the hall, around the corner." We exchanged a bewildered glance, thinking, "Sure, sounds straightforward enough.” With another slightly comical journey through the museum's bowels, we miraculously found the check-in area. We grabbed our headphones and followed the instructions to our assigned room.
This room was a little study behind an imposing glass door, which made us feel like we’d accidentally stumbled onto a set of a period drama. To our surprise, we were the only ones present! Who needs company when you're lost in a vortex of confusion, right? As the moments ticked by, a slight panic began to set in. Had we misinterpreted something? Had we arrived in the wrong place?
But just when we were ready to declare ourselves charter members of “Lost Tourists Anonymous,” the room began to fill with other equally bewildered travellers. And right on cue, our guide made their grand entrance at this very moment, as if they had been waiting for the perfect dramatic moment to lead us on our magical tour through the Louvre.
Our Louvre experience began with an absolute treasure of a tour guide – she radiated enthusiasm, her personality as bright and engaging as a beloved Disney character. With a mischievous twinkle in her eye, she swept us into a captivating journey through time and art. Before we delved into the heart of history and culture, she ensured our headphones were flawlessly operational, guaranteeing we wouldn't miss a single syllable of her enchanting narration. And just like that, we were off, ready to explore the wonders that awaited us under her expert guidance.
Our initiation into the Louvre started with a mesmerizing voyage through Egyptian art. We were immediately drawn into the rich narratives and meticulous craftsmanship of this ancient civilization. From there, our path led us to the enthralling realm of Roman art, where a magnificent array of statues, each possessing its own unique form and presence, greeted us.
A highlight of our journey was undoubtedly the Winged Victory of Samothrace. This breathtaking sculpture, though fragmented, commanded our attention with its stunning artistry and majestic air. Despite the passage of time and the ravages of history, the sculpture's beauty and profound significance still shone brilliantly.
As we continued our exploration, we found ourselves surrounded by rooms that were themselves works of art. Each space was meticulously decorated, a feast for the eyes with intricate details that invited closer inspection. Every direction we turned, something held our gaze captive. Our insightful guide shared the fascinating history behind each artwork, enriching our immersive experience and giving context to each piece.
Soon, the walls blossomed with canvases showcasing a diverse spectrum of artistic styles, spanning from the passionate strokes of Romanticism to the refined elegance of the High Renaissance and beyond. It was a sensory banquet, an artistic treasure chest overflowing with wonders, each waiting to be unearthed.
Our tour culminated with the pinnacle of our Louvre adventure: the iconic Mona Lisa. Tucked away in its own secluded area, the painting exuded a pull that drew the crowds. Security measures and velvet ropes directed eager onlookers, but we chose to appreciate its aura from a slight distance, capturing a photograph that we felt did justice to its fame. And indeed, the Mona Lisa did not disappoint; its presence was nothing short of captivating.
There was something surreal about standing before such a renowned artwork, knowing the rich history and intrigue that surrounded it. It felt like stepping into a time capsule where the past intertwined with the present. If you haven't stumbled upon the stories surrounding its past, a quick internet search is highly recommended. Fun fact: this seemingly demure painting has actually had quite a tumultuous life! It was once stolen and, believe it or not, was rediscovered hanging in a restroom for quite some time. But I'll leave those fascinating details for you to uncover – consider it a little homework assignment to delve into the bizarre and unforgettable journey of one of the world's most famous paintings!
After bidding farewell to the captivating Mona Lisa, we returned to the charming study room where we happily returned our headphones. Three hours of art and history had fueled our intellects but left our stomachs rumbling, so we made our way to one of the Louvre's conveniently located on-site dining areas.
What We Liked About The Tour:
Engaging Tour Guide: The guide was enthusiastic and engaging, making the tour enjoyable and informative.
Iconic Artworks: Viewing masterpieces like the Winged Victory of Samothrace and the Mona Lisa was a highlight.
Convenient On-Site Dining: The availability of food options like Starbucks and a food court made it easy to refuel.
What We Didn’t Like:
Chaotic Entrance: The entrance process was confusing with multiple queues and unclear directions.
Overwhelming Vastness: The sheer size of the Louvre made it difficult to navigate without getting lost.
Cryptic Directions: The directions to the tour check-in area were unclear and hard to follow.
The Louvre tour was a blend of awe-inspiring art and occasional frustrations. Despite the chaotic entrance and initial confusion, the engaging tour guide, captivating narration, and iconic artworks made the experience memorable and worthwhile. If you plan to visit the Louvre, arriving early and being prepared for the vastness of the museum can help you make the most of this cultural treasure. We are glad we opted for a tour guide, and we highly recommend having one to truly grasp and understand the history and significance of what you're looking at.
With a Starbucks beckoning and a decent food court boasting a variety of choices, we were spoiled for options. I grabbed Starbucks treats while my boyfriend opted for a hearty burger and I went for a refreshing chicken salad. It was the perfect fuel to power us through the next leg of our Louvre adventure. With our energy replenished, we embarked on a new phase of our journey: exploring the seemingly countless paintings scattered throughout the museum. With only a couple of hours before our photoshoot by the Eiffel Tower, we were determined to make the most of our remaining time. Armed with an online map that was, shall we say, somewhat helpful, we navigated a labyrinth of staircases that seemed to lead to nowhere in particular. At times, we’d discover deserted floors, and at other times, find ourselves swept along by a bustling crowd. And the staircases themselves presented their own unique mysteries – sometimes we were convinced we’d entered a different dimension. It was a real-life game of cat and mouse, with masterpieces instead of cheese!
After soaking in as much artistic wonder as we could, we hailed an Uber and returned to the hotel to make our final preparations for our eagerly anticipated photoshoot by the magnificent Eiffel Tower.
Photoshoot – AKA The Proposal
Back in the hotel, a flurry of activity transformed our room into a temporary dressing area as we prepared for the evening's photoshoot and dinner.
I'd chosen the most dazzling dress I could find, a vision of sequined splendor I’d hoped would capture the Parisian magic. Turns out, my "sparkly" dress was more of a glitter bomb. Every move left a shimmering trail - it was less chic, more a glitter infestation! My boyfriend, meanwhile, looked effortlessly suave, transforming into a James Bond doppelganger with zero fuss. Learning from previous chilly mistakes, I bundled up against the Paris evening with a strategic double-layer of leggings. A quick swipe of lipstick, a hasty hair fix, and we were ready – or at least, I was ready to spread glitter across Paris! Grabbing my warmest coat, we hailed an Uber and headed to the photo shoot, excited to create some iconic memories with the Eiffel Tower as our backdrop.
Our meeting point was the vibrant Place du Trocadero, where the Eiffel Tower rose majestically in the distance. The square bustled with life, a kaleidoscope of tourists and fellow photo sessions. Right on schedule, our photographer David and his assistant arrived, ready to turn our Parisian dreams into reality.
From the outset, the photoshoot was a delight, thanks to the affable and humorous personalities of both David, the photographer, and his assistant. David expertly guided us through poses, capturing each shot with precision, while his assistant thoughtfully managed my belongings, ensuring a seamless experience. Our initial location provided a stunning tableau, but the allure of the river beckoned, and we ventured towards its banks. What was intended as a leisurely stroll quickly transformed into a comedic challenge, as my ill-conceived choice of sky-high heels made navigating the cobblestone path a rather precarious affair. Thankfully, my jacket offered some respite from the gathering chill.
The embankment presented a new set of challenges, with gusts of wind and a noticeable temperature drop. I found myself practically living in my jacket between shots, but the allure of the location encouraged us onward. We meandered along the bank until the Eiffel Tower, in all its majestic splendor, loomed into view, providing a perfect backdrop.
It was then that David suggested a solo shot of me gazing at the iconic landmark. As I turned back, my heart did a double-take. My boyfriend was down on one knee, a ring box nestled in his palm. The rose-gold tear-drop ring within shimmered under the light. Love shone in his eyes as he spoke the words every girl longs to hear: “You make me so happy, and I love you. Will you marry me?” Tears of joy welled in my eyes as I nodded a resounding "Yes!", the shiny ring slipping onto my finger. A sweet kiss sealed the moment, and as if choreographed by fate, a passing boat erupted in cheers, adding a touch of fairytale magic to our unforgettable proposal.
Lost in the euphoria of our engagement, we captured a few more photos, immortalizing the cherished occasion. My newly-minted fiancé, with a playful glint in his eye, turned to me, "You did say yes, right?" I laughed, confirming my enthusiastic acceptance, then teasingly inquired if he’d perhaps blacked out from the sheer bliss of the moment. He admitted he had, mirroring my feeling of elation.
Our final stop was a bridge overlooking the now-illuminated Eiffel Tower. The iconic landmark cast a spellbinding glow on the shimmering water, creating a breathtaking frame for some romantic ring photos. As we bid adieu to our talented photographer and his helpful assistant, we turned our focus to a romantic dinner beneath the iconic tower, eager to continue the celebration of our love.
Madame Brasserie
With an hour and a half to spare before our dinner reservation, we confidently approached the Eiffel Tower, pre-purchased tickets in hand. We anticipated a slight wait, navigating the two designated lines, but nothing prepared us for the agonizingly slow journey that ensued. The "Pre-bought ticket line" quickly became a lesson in patience, the minutes crawling by despite our seemingly decent position. The security check further tested our resolve, its sluggish pace bordering on comical.
A mere fifteen minutes remained when we finally cleared the gates. Our next hurdle was finding the restaurant. Spotting the "Madame Brasserie" booth, I quickly provided our reservation name. A ticket in hand, we were directed to yet another queue – this one for "Visitors with tickets." Our hopes that we were finally on the right path were quickly dashed as we were met with a second, equally glacial security check.
It seemed the universe conspired to challenge our patience at every turn. Another fifteen minutes of agonizing waiting, coupled with the increasing dread of being late, finally led us to the elevator line that would take us to the first floor. But again, fortune eluded us; the current elevator was full, leaving us stranded until the next arrived.
The wait for the next elevator felt endless, but finally, our patience bore fruit. With a collective sigh of relief, we boarded and were swiftly transported to the first floor. We were met by staff and directed to the check-in area for "Madame Brasserie". Despite our unanticipated delays, we managed to check in, arriving a less-than-punctual twenty minutes past our reservation time.
Stepping into the restaurant, we were immediately struck by its beauty and elegance. Soft lighting created a warm, intimate atmosphere, while the luxurious furnishings added a touch of sophistication. But the true masterpiece was the view, a breathtaking panorama of the Parisian skyline. The city unfolded before us, a mesmerizing tapestry of sparkling lights twinkling in the distance, a scene that felt plucked from the pages of a storybook.
The restaurant offered a thoughtfully curated three-course menu, complete with suggested wine pairings, which simplified our choices beautifully. I opted for a crisp white wine, while my fiancé selected a more robust red. With our glasses filled, we eagerly anticipated the delicious courses to come.
For my appetizer, I ventured into the Cream of Cauliflower Soup. Admittedly not my usual preference, I was genuinely surprised by its delightful character. The texture was impeccable, light rather than heavy, and the flavor was subtle yet satisfying. I ended up savoring every last spoonful. My fiancé, on the other hand, chose the chicory salad with duck. While acceptable, it didn't quite achieve the culinary heights he had anticipated.
Moving on to the main course, the Chicken Cannelloni stuffed with spinach appeared intriguing, even a little intimidating. I let William take the first bite of his. His immediate positive reaction put me at ease. Hesitantly, I tried mine and was instantly won over. The chicken was incredibly tender, and the spinach provided a lovely herbaceous counterpoint, creating a harmonious blend of flavors.
The dessert, however, was the true star – an utterly decadent experience. The cake was supremely moist, and the marshmallow center offered a delightful creamy contrast. The rich chocolate cake, partnered with the velvety marshmallow and a generous drizzle of chocolate sauce, was the ideal culmination of the meal. Every bite was a pure indulgence. We concluded the meal with a palate-cleansing espresso before departing.
Throughout our dinner, the staff were both friendly and attentive, consistently checking on our needs. And the view! Quite simply, it was breathtaking. We both agreed we would gladly return, though the somewhat cumbersome journey to reach the restaurant detracted slightly from the overall experience. Therefore, we would assess the restaurant with a solid 8 out of 10. Despite the minor inconvenience of access, the exceptional food, impeccable service, and stunning setting made it a memorable encounter worthy of a future visit.
Upon leaving, we chose to descend the stairs rather than wait for the elevator. Surprisingly, the walk down was pleasant and quick, allowing us to further appreciate the captivating views. Once at street level, we hailed an Uber and headed back to our hotel. With a long, exciting New Year’s Eve celebration planned for tomorrow, we wanted to be well-rested and ready for the festivities. We were looking forward to welcoming the new year with great anticipation.
Day Four
Following a jam-packed day, we embraced the opportunity for some much-needed rest, knowing that New Year's Eve, and a long night of festivities, awaited us. Our itinerary for the day was a perfect blend of leisurely charm and iconic landmarks: a relaxed brunch downtown, followed by a visit to the second level of the Eiffel Tower, and culminating in the New Year's countdown at the majestic Arc de Triomphe. Buzzing with anticipation, we prepared ourselves and stepped out into the vibrant Parisian day.
We hailed an Uber to whisk us downtown, where we began our amble through the charming streets, our eyes peeled for the perfect brunch spot. Despite consulting Google, no place truly resonated with us until we happened upon a darling little restaurant called Immersion.
Immersion
Its crisp white facade, punctuated by cheerful pops of yellow, immediately captivated our attention. The absence of a crowd further enticed us, and we decided to take a chance. Upon reaching the entrance, a sign instructed us to wait for assistance. As a small queue formed behind us, it became clear that this was a popular destination. Soon enough, our names were on the waiting list. We discovered that Immersion didn't accept reservations at this location, which, in a way, worked to our advantage, as it gave us a shot at securing a table. Patiently, we waited for about 30 to 45 minutes, the anticipation building.
Finally, our perseverance paid off, and we were called to be seated. Stepping inside, we were immediately struck by the restaurant's elegant yet welcoming ambiance. Lush greenery adorned the space, while large mirrors and a spiraling staircase, also embellished with foliage, added a touch of magic. While we waited, I had already perused the menu online, agonizing over the enticing choices. Ultimately, I opted for a classic and irresistible combination of eggs, bacon, and pancakes. William chose the same, and we complemented our meal with lattes and mimosas, ready to indulge.
Our food arrived promptly, a feast for both the eyes and the palate. The pancakes, pillowy and light, were graced with a whimsical heart-shaped pat of butter—a touch that elevated their appeal. The first bite confirmed what our eyes had already promised: light, airy, and bursting with delicate flavor, the pancakes were a delightful blend of sweetness and warmth. With each mouthful, the fluffy texture melted effortlessly on our tongues, while the buttery essence danced on our taste buds, leaving a comforting, deeply satisfying sensation.
As for the lattes, they were simply divine: a heavenly infusion of rich creaminess and bold espresso, perfectly balanced to tantalize the senses and elevate our entire dining experience. The service was both efficient and exceptionally warm, adding to the overall pleasure of our brunch.
Overall, we wholeheartedly give Immersion a perfect 10/10. From the truly exceptional food and ambiance to the friendly staff and exquisite drinks, everything was flawlessly executed. I was so captivated that I even ordered a latte to go—it was that good! Without hesitation, we would recommend this delightful brunch spot to anyone seeking a truly memorable dining experience.
Energized by a delicious brunch, we embarked on a city exploration, letting the vibrant atmosphere envelop us. I secured a 48-hour Big Bus tour pass, allowing us to continue our discoveries from the previous day. We boarded near the Louvre and enjoyed another picturesque ride through the city's heart. Our last stop was the Place de la Concorde, where we strolled among the elegant fountains, their intricate details captivating our attention. After a fulfilling immersion in the city's energy, we summoned an Uber and returned to the hotel. Eager to rest and refresh, we anticipated the evening's festivities.
Eiffel Tower: Top Level
Refreshed from a period of relaxation, we hailed an Uber to the Eiffel Tower, eager for a final, spectacular view from one of Paris's most recognizable landmarks. Our earlier attempts to secure tickets to the third level, with its alluring Champagne bar, had been thwarted. However, we were successful in purchasing second-level tickets online. Approaching the tower, we steeled ourselves for a familiar challenge – navigating the inevitable lines and confusion with the same determination as our prior visit.
We found ourselves once more in the “pre-purchased ticket line,” patiently enduring the wait. To our surprise, security moved more quickly than the previous evening, and we soon found ourselves inside. Yet, confusion re-emerged as there was no designated area as we recalled from our prior dining experience. After making inquiries, we discovered that the queue for the second floor wouldn't open until 30 minutes before our scheduled time—a 45-minute wait.
To pass the time, we indulged in treats from a nearby patisserie, the biting wind making the cold feel even more intense. Finally, it was our turn to join the line, but not without frustration as the group ahead of us was directed to the very line we had initially inquired about. After another 30-minute wait, complicated by random people joining a nearby line, creating more chaos, we were finally permitted to switch to that specific line. However, our journey wasn't over, as we still had to endure another slow security check before reaching the elevator queue. Fortunately, we managed to catch the first elevator this time.
Reaching the second level, we were delighted to discover that a champagne area was open, the third level being closed due to high winds. It was a stroke of unexpected luck! We secured some champagne and leisurely wandered, enjoying the lively atmosphere. Despite the crowds, we found vantage points to capture the breathtaking panorama of the city. Paris unfolded before us, a vibrant tapestry of light and sound, truly captivating.
Sipping champagne with my beloved, overlooking Paris from the Eiffel Tower’s second story, felt magical. I wholeheartedly recommend this experience, initial snags notwithstanding – it's entirely worth it! After braving the cold and finishing our champagne, we opted for the stairs again for our descent, finding it quicker than waiting for the elevator.
Su Misura
After navigating the crowds around the Eiffel Tower, we were ready for dinner and decided to venture a bit further. That's when we discovered Su Misura, a gluten-free restaurant tucked away on a side street. We walked in without a reservation but luckily, they had a table for us. The place was small but really charming and stylish. The menu was tempting, and I ended up choosing the Black Truffle Pasta. William went for the pizza. Our food arrived looking incredible, and it tasted even better! My pasta was fantastic, creamy, and the truffle aroma was just amazing.
William's pizza was a cheesy, tasty treat – and the crust even looked like a heart! Seriously impressive for a gluten-free pizza. We rounded off the meal with Tiramisu and Affogato al Caffe for dessert. They were okay, but nothing to write home about. So, overall, we’d give Su Misura a solid 7 out of 10. The food was seriously good, especially the pasta and pizza, but the service could have been a bit friendlier and more efficient. Still, if you're looking for great gluten-free options in a cozy place, we definitely recommend it.
New Year’s Eve
The energy of the city was palpable as we navigated the throngs of people towards the Arc de Triomphe for the New Year's Eve celebration. Lost in the sea of faces and unsure of the precise path, we surrendered to the collective flow, letting the crowd guide us through the Parisian streets. Approaching the entrance, however, the festive atmosphere shifted. A formidable wall of people and stern police presence met us, with only a select few permitted through at a time.
The scene was reminiscent of a chaotic festival, where personal space was a distant memory. A sense of tension hung in the air. While the situation felt uneasy, I focused on taking deep breaths, while William, ever the protector, kept a firm hand on my arm. Gradually, the police loosened their control, allowing a more fluid movement into the secured area – which, we discovered, was simply the iconic Avenue des Champs-Élysées. Though the rigorous security was undoubtedly for public safety, it undeniably added an edge of unpredictability to the night.
Once inside, we strategically positioned ourselves for the remaining two hours of waiting. Consciously avoiding the dense center to maintain breathing room and a potential escape route, we found a spot that offered a balance. As the music surged and the show commenced, a familiar feeling washed over me. The scene echoed the New Year's Eve celebrations we'd watched on countless screens back in the States. Despite the French announcements, the spectacle was undeniably captivating. The surprising inclusion of American music further enhanced the festive mood.
About an hour into the wait, the inevitable struck - we both needed a restroom. We embarked on a quest, weaving through the crowd, only to discover an astonishing absence of facilities. Not a single restroom was in sight, despite the immense gathering of people. Returning to our carefully chosen spot proved arduous. The streets had swollen with even more people, making movement a frustrating challenge. Yet, we pressed on, determined to reclaim our space, which we successfully managed to do for the rest of our time there.
As the final seconds ticked away, the Arc de Triomphe transformed into a beacon, its surface a canvas for the mesmerizing countdown. A collective hush fell over the throng of half a million souls, then erupted into a unified chant: "3...2...1... HAPPY NEW YEAR!" The Parisian sky ignited in a kaleidoscope of color, an explosive ballet of fireworks that stole my breath. It was, without a doubt, one of the most stunning displays I had ever witnessed. Lost in the joyful pandemonium, surrounded by dancing, celebrating strangers, the realization washed over me: it was 2024. And I was here, in the heart of Paris, ushering in the new year with my fiancé.
The afterglow of the fireworks eventually faded, and we set off on foot, thinking an Uber would be easily found on the periphery of the celebrations. But as the crowds thinned, a quiet unease settled in. Then, the piercing wail of sirens shattered the silence, followed by an amplified voice declaring, "Attention, the road is about to open. Please clear the street." The sudden, stark announcement, with its vaguely ominous tone, felt like a scene pulled from a dystopian film, sending a jolt of unease through us.
Our hopes of a quick ride vanished along with the crowds. Uber requests went unanswered, and our attempts to secure a bike or scooter proved fruitless. With no other choice, we commenced a lengthy trek back to our hotel – nearly three miles that seemed to stretch on forever. Exhausted, muscles aching, and with bladders nearing their limit, we finally reached our room. Despite the unexpected ordeal, we couldn't deny the unique and memorable start to our New Year. We collapsed into bed, praying for a swift recovery before our planned visit to Disneyland Paris the next day.
Disneyland Paris
Our final day in Paris dawned with a lingering fog of fatigue, the remnants of a long night of Parisian revelry. Despite the sore muscles and heavy eyelids, a potent dose of excitement propelled us forward: today, a lifelong dream would materialize – a visit to Disneyland Paris. The prospect of magic fueled us, even as the weather forecast threatened rain and a biting chill. Undeterred, we were determined to make the most of every moment.
We bundled ourselves against the cold, grabbed a quick lobby breakfast, and summoned an Uber. While the Disney shuttle bus was an option, its schedule conflicted with our desire to catch the evening fireworks, and the cost for two was comparable to an Uber, giving us the convenience of direct transport. The drive to Marne-la-Vallee, nearly an hour outside of Paris, felt like a journey into a different world. The landscape surrounding the park was surprisingly stark, a stark contrast to the bustling energy surrounding other Disney Parks I’ve experienced. As we pulled up, we were dropped off right at the park's main entrance. Having spent time in Anaheim's Disneyland and possessing hazy memories of Walt Disney World in Florida, my comparisons will primarily be drawn from my experiences there.
At Disneyland in Anaheim, the vibrant Downtown Disney district is a kaleidoscope of shops and restaurants. I had naturally assumed Disneyland Paris would echo this vibrant atmosphere. However, the initial approach revealed a slightly different story. The main strip, while pleasant, was occupied by only a handful of familiar food chains, such as Five Guys and Vapiano, alongside a single Disney store. Before officially entering the park, we encountered "Disney Village," a small commercial area with a few more shops and dining options. While we didn’t linger there extensively, we noted the presence of several on-property hotels, a feature that made sense given the area’s relative isolation.
Stepping closer, we were greeted by the grand, iconic sign: “Disneyland Paris,” emblazoned in a dazzling blue, punctuated by sparkling gold accents. It was a truly magical sight. After scanning our tickets, we moved through the gates and into the heart of the park. The enchanting Christmas decorations still adorned the scene, enhancing the festive atmosphere. Just inside, Mickey and Minnie Mouse were dancing a joyful waltz, a welcoming sight that instantly lifted our spirits. Main Street, while familiar in its design, felt slightly more compact and boasted fewer retail offerings than its American counterpart.
Though the merchandise selection was somewhat limited, the Christmas overlay created an undeniably enchanting atmosphere. Twinkling lights nestled among lush foliage and festive decorations, transforming Main Street into a truly magical thoroughfare. This created a unique charm that I wholeheartedly embraced and enjoyed.
Pirates of the Caribbean
The day after New Year's dawned with a surprising tranquility at the park. The usual throngs of visitors were still absent, affording us a rare window of opportunity to conquer some of the most popular attractions before the inevitable crowds descended. Our first target, and my personal favorite, was Pirates of the Caribbean.
The journey to the entrance itself felt like a mini-expedition. Unlike its Disneyland counterpart, this version was cleverly concealed amongst cascading waterfalls, shadowy caves, and imposing pirate ships, lending an air of mystery to the start of the experience. After a brief search, we were rewarded with a line-free entrance, which I couldn't help but point out to William, a testament to the early hour. Disneyland, I explained, is typically a whirlwind of activity from the very moment the gates open.
Stepping aboard the boats felt immediately familiar, with an ambiance that echoed the Disneyland ride. My mind anticipated the initial, playful drops, but instead experienced only two gentle dips, much less thrilling than my adventurous spirit had hoped for.
Despite the absence of those anticipated plunges, the rest of the ride swept me away. Intricately detailed pirate tableaux unfolded before us, showcasing a bustling auction gone awry, a daring prison escape, and a thunderous ship battle, complete with the roar of cannons. The level of detail was remarkable – flickering lanterns cast dancing shadows, realistic water effects lapped at the boat's edge, and the pungent aroma of gunpowder hung in the air, adding layers of authenticity to the scene.
A particular highlight was the appearance of a familiar face: Captain Jack Sparrow himself, cleverly integrated among the buccaneers, lending a touch of Hollywood magic to the classic ride. As our boat drifted along the dark waterways, we were completely enveloped by this world of high-seas adventure and peril. The journey culminated with a climb back to the fort, where the line between myth and reality blurred, reminding us of the timeless pull of this captivating pirate saga.
While the storytelling deviated slightly from Disneyland's narrative – nuances that only a frequent rider like myself might pick up on – these differences were minor. Although I missed the thrill of the larger drops, the deeply immersive experience, coupled with the intricate and evocative pirate scenes, made the entire journey incredibly enjoyable. The enchanting atmosphere, punctuated by the boisterous pirate revelry, solidifies Pirates of the Caribbean at Disneyland Paris as an absolute must-see.
Indiana Jones and the Temple of Peril
Our adventure continued with Indiana Jones and the Temple of Peril, a ride tucked conveniently near the familiar shores of Pirates of the Caribbean. Before we even stepped foot on the Parisian grounds, my research had revealed this wasn't your typical Indiana Jones experience. This was a rollercoaster, a thrilling plunge into a lost temple aboard mine cars, complete with a dizzying 360-degree loop. The track, a chaotic dance of twists and turns, navigated the temple's ruins, simulating a heart-stopping, "out of control" descent. A stark contrast to Disneyland's version which boasts a motion vehicle, plunging guests into a subterranean quest, complete with supernatural guardians and a terrifying rolling boulder.
Knowing my own limits when it comes to rollercoasters, I opted to cheer from the sidelines while William bravely faced the Temple's perils. My mind, however, was set on a different kind of adventure: a quest for the legendary Disneyland churros. I practically skipped to the nearest snack stand, only to be met with a stark reminder – I was in Paris! Churros were nowhere to be found. Instead, the air was filled with the sweet aroma of crepes and Nutella waffles.
Slightly disappointed, but never one to back down from a treat, I settled on a Nutella waffle and a latte for us both. When William returned, his adrenaline still pumping, I was instantly reassured that my decision to watch from afar was absolutely the right one. His description of the ride confirmed my suspicions; the Temple was a perilous place, indeed, best left to the more thrill-seeking.
Phantom Manor (Haunted Mansion) & Enchanted Passage of Aladdin
Next, we ventured into the spectral embrace of Phantom Manor, Paris's chilling counterpart to the Haunted Mansion. The absence of a queue was again a blessing, allowing us to seamlessly glide into one of the iconic half-dome vehicles. The ride initially felt familiar, echoing the atmospheric journey through ghostly scenes we knew from Disneyland. However, this is where the similarities end. Unlike its movie-inspired cousin, Phantom Manor boasts a wholly original and captivating narrative.
We were transported to the haunted mining town of Thunder Mesa, a place steeped in the lore of Big Thunder Mountain and the origins of Frontierland itself. This extra layer of storytelling added a fascinating depth to the experience, sparking my curiosity so much that I found myself immediately researching its history. I was genuinely surprised by how much I had been missing out on.
Next on our Disneyland Paris adventure was the Enchanted Passage of Aladdin, a unique experience I'd never encountered before. Curiosity piqued, we ventured into this attraction, initially unsure whether it was a ride or a more passive experience. We soon discovered it was a captivating walk-through, where the tale of Aladdin unfolded through meticulously crafted figurines displayed behind illuminated glass panels. The level of detail was truly impressive, showcasing the artistry involved. While it lacked the thrill of some of the park's more adrenaline-pumping rides, the Enchanted Passage offered a fascinating glimpse into the artistry of Disney storytelling, presenting a different facet of their magic.
Mad Hatter's Teacups and Alice's Curious Labyrinth
Our next adventure plunged us straight into the delightful chaos of the Mad Hatter's Teacups. Imagine my surprise when the Queen of Hearts, a character I hadn't encountered at Disneyland, greeted us! I couldn't resist a vibrant pink teacup adorned with a whimsical pattern, and we eagerly climbed aboard. The ride felt familiar, echoing its Disneyland counterpart, yet it seemed grander, sheltered by a roof.
Colorful lanterns danced overhead, casting a warm glow, while lively music infused the air, creating an atmosphere of pure, unadulterated joy. We spun our teacup with determined gusto, pushing it to the limits of its whirling potential, despite my own slightly less enthusiastic relationship with intense spinning! While I find the ride thoroughly enjoyable, I can't deny a quiet sense of relief when it finally comes to a halt.
But the true enchantment awaited us in Alice's Curious Labyrinth. When I first saw the sign, I admit, I anticipated a traditional ride. Instead, I was swept into something far more captivating: an interactive journey through the very heart of Wonderland. This was no mere maze; it was an invitation to walk alongside Alice, navigating her fantastical world. From the moment I stepped inside, I was completely immersed in the narrative. The maze itself seemed to unfold like the pages of a well-loved book, each turn revealing a new element of the story. Giant playing cards towered above us, and artfully sculpted topiaries served as playful guides, leading us deeper into the labyrinth's shifting paths.
The journey culminated at the imposing castle of the Queen of Hearts. A climb to its peak rewarded us with a breathtaking panoramic view of Fantasyland—a magical vista that took my breath away. But the exploration didn't end there. As we continued, we encountered the mischievous grin of the Cheshire Cat, peeking out from hidden corners. Further along, we stumbled upon the Mad Hatter's perpetual tea party, a delightful scene of whimsical chaos.
Each of these interactive elements drew me deeper into the story, transforming me from a mere observer into an active participant. Alice's Curious Labyrinth was so much more than just a maze; it was a journey into the very essence of a timeless tale, a vivid reminder that the most extraordinary adventures are often found along the less-traveled paths, where magic is liberally sprinkled.
Festive Feast
The morning's excitement soon gave way to the familiar rumble of hunger. Luckily, we found ourselves amidst a charming cluster of Christmas-themed food stalls, straight out of a whimsical "Frozen" scene. These festive huts, with their cheerful decorations and costumed staff, created an undeniably magical atmosphere. Each stall boasted a unique culinary specialty, and we were eager to sample a few. Our first stop yielded a delectable grilled cheese, where fresh, molten cheese was generously scooped onto the bread right before our eyes - a truly decadent experience.
William, embracing the park's ambiance, also opted for some cured sausage and a glass of wine, a common sight throughout Disneyland Paris. I, meanwhile, sought refuge from the cold with a steaming cup of hot chocolate, adding another layer of warmth to my already bundled-up state. To our delight, both the food and drinks were surprisingly excellent, effectively banishing the chill and lifting our spirits. And, of course, we couldn't resist the allure of Parisian macarons – a must when visiting the city of lights!
Fortified and happy, we set off to admire Sleeping Beauty's Castle. It was truly breathtaking, towering before us even grander than its Disneyland counterpart. The castle's intricate details, combined with its pristine condition, made it appear all the more enchanting, almost lifted from the pages of a storybook.
While the option to explore its interiors was tempting, we decided to soak in its majesty from the outside, hoping to make the most of our limited time. Before moving on, we captured some memorable photos together, proudly sporting the custom-made sweatshirts I’d ordered from Wild Creations. These sweatshirts weren't just stylish but incredibly soft and warm, a welcome comfort against the brisk Parisian air.
Wild Creations had truly nailed my vision, crafting sweatshirts that were exactly as I imagined. They were more than just clothing; they became a special, personalized touch that added another layer of magic to our Disneyland Paris adventure.
Peter Pan's Flight & It’s a Small World
Our day at Disneyland Paris took a delightful turn with a journey to one of my absolute favorite attractions: Peter Pan's Flight. The queue snaked along, a familiar testament to the ride's enduring popularity—a true Disneyland staple. The anticipation mounted with each passing minute, but after patiently waiting for a full hour, our moment finally arrived. We climbed aboard our very own pirate galleon, and instantly, the magic began. The vehicle, suspended gracefully from an overhead track, evoked an incredible sensation of weightless flight.
With a touch of Tinker Bell's pixie dust, our galleon soared effortlessly from the nursery window into a dazzling, star-studded night. The illuminated cityscape of London unfolded beneath us, its iconic landmarks like Big Ben and Tower Bridge shimmering with captivating light. We were then whisked away to the fantastical realm of Neverland, where vibrant jungle scenes and the Lost Boys' secret hideout came alive.
We witnessed Peter Pan's daring duels with Captain Hook and encountered beloved characters, including the mischievous Tinker Bell and the ever-ticking Tick-Tock the Crocodile. The ride seamlessly blended animated figures, dynamic lighting, and a whimsical musical score to create an atmosphere of pure enchantment. As our journey drew to a close, and the galleon gently descended back to London, we were left with a lingering sense of wonder and excitement. Despite the long wait, the sheer magic of Peter Pan's Flight was undeniably worth every moment.
Seeking a respite from the excitement and a chance to warm up, we then made our way to “It’s a Small World.” As we approached, I immediately noticed a subtle but distinct difference from its Disneyland counterpart. The clock face, a focal point of the building’s exterior, sported a unique, more intricate design. To our surprise, we were able to board the ride without any delay, a welcome change of pace.
Stepping onto the brightly colored boat, I was instantly filled with warmth as the familiar theme song filled the air. Unlike its Disneyland counterpart, the atmosphere felt noticeably cleaner and more organized, enhancing the overall experience. Even the iconic song seemed slightly different, perhaps a bit faster, and the ride felt a touch shorter, though no less captivating. We gently floated through vibrant scenes representing various countries around the globe, each populated by animatronic dolls in their traditional attire. The whimsical designs and vibrant colors breathed life into each culture, proudly showcasing their unique traditions.
The ride beautifully conveyed a sense of global unity, effortlessly demonstrating how connected we all are. The slow pace allowed us to appreciate the intricate detail and artistry woven into each scene. By the time we reached the end, I found myself humming along to the familiar tune, feeling intimately connected to the diverse world we had just traversed. Despite some subtle differences from the Disneyland version, this version maintained the essence of original, reinforcing the message of unity and reminding us that, in the end, it truly is a small world. “It’s a Small World” was a heartwarming journey that left me with a smile and the infectious song echoing in my heart.
Captain Jack’s – Restaurant des Pirates
Our anticipation was high as we arrived at Captain Jack’s, a restaurant promising a swashbuckling ambiance reminiscent of the beloved Pirates of the Caribbean ride. The waterfront location added to the allure, and we were seated within a reasonable ten minutes. Our initial experience was promising; our server was attentive, taking our drink and food orders promptly. For starters, we opted for the Smoked Chicken Chiquetaiile and the Shrimp Creole with Caribbean smoked avocado. Sadly, this is where our meal began to unravel. The Chicken Chiquetaiile possessed an unsettling texture, proving to be unpalatable for both of us. While the Shrimp Creole was acceptable, it was far from memorable. The saving grace of the appetizers was the delightful smoked avocado, which we thoroughly enjoyed.
However, our server seemed to vanish into the watery depths after clearing our appetizer plates. We were left without utensils, our drinks untouched, and our attempts to flag down a staff member were met with frustrating indifference. It was only after an extended wait that a new server approached, informing us, rather belatedly, that our original server had gone home for the evening. The lack of communication was baffling, leaving us to wonder why we had been left in limbo.
Finally equipped with utensils, we moved on to the main course: the Caribbean Chicken with captain’s rice. Despite its visually appealing presentation of tender chicken, fragrant spices, and flavorful-looking rice, the dish fell completely flat. The chicken was disappointingly mushy, and the rice lacked any discernible flavor. Disheartened but still hopeful, we decided to try the Tonka bean flavored chocolate tart for dessert. While passable, it didn't reach the level of quality we’ve come to expect from Disney establishments.
To compound our woes, the bill arrived, revealing an egregious error: we’d been charged twice for several items. This necessitated yet another frustrating wait as we sought to correct the mistake. After a grueling three hours spent in the restaurant, we emerged thoroughly disappointed. The combination of subpar service, underwhelming food, and inflated prices left a bitter taste in our mouths. Despite the restaurant's appealing atmosphere, we can’t, in good conscience, award it more than a dismal 1 out of 10. This maritime adventure was certainly not a treasure we’d recommend unearthing.
Star Wars: Hyperspace Mountain & Buzz Lightyear Laser Blast
Our evening at Disney Paris shifted into hyperdrive after dinner, beginning with the immersive thrill of Star Wars: Hyperspace Mountain. It was a 20-minute journey for Will through a galaxy far, far away. As he stepped into the sleek, futuristic spaceport, the iconic Star Wars theme swelled, immediately setting the stage for an epic adventure. Boarding a streamlined starfighter, he was propelled into the void at breathtaking speeds, the G-forces pressing in as he hurtled through hyperspace. The ride was a masterful blend of roller coaster thrills – twisting, turning, and plummeting – all perfectly synchronized with dramatic Star Wars battle scenes projected around him.
Will felt every inch the pilot, maneuvering through intense dogfights, dodging TIE fighters with laser blasts streaking across the dark, star-filled expanse. The sheer adrenaline of the high-speed coaster, combined with the captivating Star Wars storytelling, created an unforgettable experience. Hyperspace Mountain wasn't just a ride; it was a plunge into the heart of the Star Wars universe, a perfect marriage of cinematic magic and pure, unadulterated thrill.
Our adventure continued with a leap across the park to Buzz Lightyear Laser Blast (known as Buzz Lightyear Astro Blasters stateside). After a 30-minute wait, we boarded our individual space vehicles, each equipped with a joystick for steering and, more importantly, a laser blaster. The stated mission? To thwart the evil Emperor Zurg from Toy Story. The real mission? To outscore the person next to you, of course!
The ride was a vibrant kaleidoscope of colorful, cosmic scenes, teeming with glowing targets and menacing robot adversaries. As I unleashed my laser fire, my score was prominently displayed on the cruiser, fueling the playful competition. The ability to spin my vehicle in any direction to snag targets from all angles added an extra layer of dynamic fun. The friendly rivalry with William to achieve the highest score was infectious.
The triumphant return to Star Command signified the end of the ride, and I eagerly checked my final score. The scoring system, ranging from Level 1 Star Cadet to the coveted Level 7 Galactic Hero status (requiring ever-increasing point thresholds), added a layer of engagement and replayability. We immediately decided to ride it again, fueled by my desire to claim victory, but despite my best efforts (and perhaps some suspiciously faulty lasers!), William emerged victorious once more. Buzz Lightyear Laser Blast delivered an exhilarating blend of fun, interactive gameplay, and lighthearted competition, making it a crowd-pleaser for both kids and adults.
Wondrous Journeys
As dusk settled over Disneyland Paris, a magical transformation occurred. The castle, adorned with its festive Christmas overlay, glowed invitingly, while the tower pulsed with mesmerizing blue light. It was a scene straight from the pages of a beloved fairytale. The anticipation for the "Wondrous Journeys" projection show, a spectacle promised to paint the castle with light and story, was palpable. However, the intermittent rain cast a shadow on our hopes. Yet, undeterred, we decided to seize the moment for one last adventure: a spirited voyage on Pirates of the Caribbean. As most gathered prime viewing positions for the show, we practically had the ride to ourselves, our boat gliding through the watery depths.
Emerging from the ride, we were energized, ready to witness the much-anticipated show. But the path to the castle was a labyrinth of unexpected blockades. The rain intensified, making navigation even more challenging. Guided by the faintest glow of the castle and following other determined souls, we eventually reached the front. However, our hopes of a clear view were dashed by a sea of bobbing umbrellas.
Despite our best efforts to maneuver politely, a rising tide of frustration began to dampen our spirits. As the show commenced, a wave of déjà vu washed over me - it was identical to the projection I had experienced at Disneyland just months before. While visually impressive, with vibrant characters dancing across the castle, it felt less awe-inspiring than a fireworks display. Damp, chilled, and with a growing sense of disappointment, we decided to forgo the rest of the show and seek our escape, our only thought now focused on finding a ride back to the hotel.
Outside the park, our options were limited. We were drawn to the one open establishment we could find: Five Guys and Fries. With some comforting fries and a milkshake in hand, we thought our fortunes might change, but our initial attempts to book an Uber all fell through. Thankfully, we spotted a few taxi drivers. After a brief negotiation, we secured a ride back to our hotel, the cost a little higher than an Uber but welcome relief nonetheless. Given the scarcity of readily available transportation, this felt like a small victory.
Finally, back at the hotel, exhaustion won over. We decided to call it a night, setting our alarm clocks early to manage the morning pack-up. The day, a blend of magic, misdirection, and mild misfortune, had taken its toll, and we gratefully surrendered to sleep, ready to leave the Parisian adventure behind (for now)

Our Parisian adventure marked not only our first international trip together, but also a truly exhilarating experience. While the city's chaotic traffic was a minor hurdle, Paris ultimately captivated us and etched itself into our memories. It was here, along the Seine's romantic banks, that we celebrated a momentous occasion - our engagement, captured beautifully during a magical photoshoot. We immersed ourselves in the city's iconic landmarks, from finally beholding the enigmatic Mona Lisa to witnessing the Eiffel Tower shimmer against the night. Ascending 377 feet offered a breathtaking panorama of the Parisian skyline, a view that will remain with us. Beyond the sights, we savored the exquisite tastes of French cuisine and basked in the collective energy of New Year's Eve fireworks alongside countless other celebrants. And, fulfilling a lifelong dream, we spent a joyful day at Disneyland Paris.
Paris, with its beauty and undeniable charm, has ignited a deep-seated wanderlust within us. We yearn to return, not only to re-experience the magic we already know, but to delve deeper into its hidden corners and uncover the many secrets that still elude us – both within the city limits and beyond. This memorable trip has left us with a profound desire to continue our explorations, forever drawing us back to the city of lights and love.
